What happens with publications before they go to press?
All our publications are trialled and commented on by a range of people,
including pupils in school and teachers of mathematics. Concept Cartoons
in Mathematics Education is no exception. People didn’t always agree on
what was the correct mathematical perspective when it was trialled,
because some aspects of mathematics are debatable. We tried to
represent the consensus viewpoints.
What happens with publications after they go to press?
Ideas can continue to develop after a publication is printed, and publishers
often spot things that weren’t obvious to anyone before it went to press.
Concept Cartoons in Mathematics Education is no exception.
What would have been done differently?
Concept Cartoon 1.5:
There is a typographical change. Hundreths should be spelt as hundredths.

Concept Cartoon 8.2: All the Concept Cartoons include misconceptions and areas of uncertainty. In 8.2 there are several potential areas for discussion. These are the question of whether the axes should start at zero, how the axes in a histogram are labelled, and whether all the intervals on the horizontal axis should be similar. There is also the question of whether there should be gaps between the columns, or whether there are only gaps on a bar chart. We realise now that it would have been more helpful to end paragraph 2 with 'Can you spot any other problems with the graph?'.
